Viper had agreed to meet with Ember. She hadn’t expected him to, but maybe he could read the desperation in her letter.

Ember waited for him as she thought of her mother, her anxiety causing her to jump when the knock came. He was ushered in, and for a moment they simply stared at each other.

“You asked to see me,” he said, standing stiffly in the doorway. “Yes,” Ember said. “Please, sit down.”

Viper did, sitting across from her on a chair. He looked uncomfortable. Ember wasn’t surprised. Even the prince himself had felt odd in the Draco Estate. Sometimes even she felt unwelcome, as though the Dragon wanted her out.

“Just tell me why I’m here,” Viper said. “I’m not interested in your pleasantries. You want something, and I want to know what.”

“You’re right. I do want something. I want to apologize.”

“Apology not accepted. What else?”

“Phoenix above, Viper. Get over yourself. My mother has been missing for over two weeks. I have better things to worry about than you throwing yourself a pity party. I’m asking you to accept the apology and then help me. You’ll be rewarded handsomely, of course, if you agree.”

“Go on,” Viper said, and Ember was glad he was at least listening. She figured it would be easiest to get to him if she mentioned money. The lower houses could never resist money.

“It was your idea to talk to members of House Vulpus. And that was a great idea. I did go to them.”

“Really?” Viper said, sitting forward a bit. Ember suppressed a smirk. This was too easy.

“Yes. The twins, Bat and Hawk. They weren’t as helpful as I’d hoped, but it was a good idea. I still paid them. Right after I tried to kill their mother.” Viper choked on a laugh, and Ember was glad she was getting to him.

“You did not.”

Ember smiled, a cold, calculated gesture designed to draw him in and make him let his guard down. “Well, maybe I didn’t try to kill her. But I lost it, I guess. She’s okay, now.”

Viper nodded. “So. Why am I here, other than to bear the brunt of your awful apologies?” Ember gave him a dirty look before changing her posture. She had relaxed too much, even for pretending.

Was she pretending?

Ember shook her head to clear the thought from her mind—of course she was pretending—and opened her mouth to say something else, but was interrupted by Roland rushing into the room, holding a letter. Even from where she sat, Ember could see the black envelope and the gold Phoenix crest stamped on the front.

Only the Phoenixes used black paper, and she knew who it was from before Roland even said anything.

“I’m sorry to interrupt, but this is from the palace, Lady Ember. The messenger said it was urgent.”

Ember snatched the letter from his hand. “Thank you, Roland. I’ll call you if I need to send a response back. Viper, you don’t have to stay. I can’t force you to do anything.”

Ember tore into the letter, desperate for information, completely ignoring the fact that Viper hadn’t moved.
